The ABCs of teaching children to ski
Before enrolling your child in lessons, parents should make sure they take into consideration what the child might be capable of at a given age.

All of the snow so far this winter has most ski and snowboard lovers itching to hit the slopes.

Many parents want to get the whole family in on the fun. However, before you get your tot out there, here is some advice to consider from a lifelong ski instructor who is the director of training and Development at Bear Creek Mountain Resort in Longswamp Township.

During Lloyd Gonzalez's 38-year career as a ski instructor, he has taught every level of the sport, including hundreds of children.

"I enjoy seeing young people have the opportunity to get an early start on what could be a lifetime sport," he said.

Prior to coming to Bear Creek, Gonzalez, Longswamp Township, was the director of skiing at Jack Frost and Big Boulder for 25 years.

Gonzalez, 55, explained how the success of getting a child started in skiing or snowboarding is done in partnership with parents.

"Their expectations are always kind of a driving force," said Gonzalez. "It can affect it negatively or positively."

He said some parents are so anxious to get their children out on the slopes with them, they don't take into consideration what the child might be capable of at a given age.

"The parents are looking forward to the days when their children can ski with them on the same kind of slopes and ski all day," he said. "There are times when that eagerness can want to accelerate that process too much."

Last weekend, Brian Buskirk, a snowboarder from Lancaster County, was excited to get his son, Christian, 8, out on the slopes with him. He enrolled his child in the ski program at an age when he felt he was ready to be on his way....
